WELCOME TO SARAJEVO
In summer, Sarajevo is full of tourists because there are open air cafes, mountains with fresh air, night life rich with culture - and this year you can attend our classes in the morning and in the evening, choose from the program of two festivals: Baščaršijske noći and Sarajevo Film Festival.
Just to remind you of this sevdalinka:
Ko se jednom napije vode sa Baščaršije
nikad više iz Sarajeva taj otići ne umije
WELCOME TO UMLIP/AYLI
After having organized a successful first edition of the B/C/S language summer school, the impressions settled, we have improved what needed improvement and now we present to you the second edition of the B/C/S summer school.
We have gathered all the reports and papers from the workshops and classes into a special edition of the e-magazine lingvisti.ba. Bearing in mind that the magazine is written in B/C/S, maybe you would rather look at some photos.
WHY LEARN B/C/S
Who can apply?
The only requirement for applying for this school is that you must be older than 15.
So, you are from Bosnia and Herzegovina, you know someone who speaks B/C/S, you are studying the languages of BiH, you want to read Ivo Andrić in the original, your husband/wife/girlfriend/boyfriend is from the Balkans... These are some of the reasons for you to attend this school.
Students can be:
- Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina who currently live abroad, descendants of those who emigrated from BiH and who want to brush up on their language or those who want to start learning it.
- This is an excellent opportunity for foreign citizens living in Sarajevo and BiH who do not have time to attend courses during the year.
- Those who study B/C/S outside of BiH are given the chance to place the languages they learn into the cultural framework of this area.
- Everyone else who has the desire to learn the languages and cultures of BiH.
Description of the school
The summer school is organized in intensive two-week classes, or ten working days. Regarding the level of your knowledge, you can attend the beginner, intermediate or advanced classes. In order for us to assess your knowledge and place you in the appropriate study group, you will have to take a placement test.
The classes start at 9 am, and last for four school periods (two double periods, 90 minutes each) with a 30 minute break between the second and third period. From a total of 40 classes, twenty classes are meant for learning grammar and twenty for reading texts and conversation. The books are adjusted for particular levels, and the texts correspond to the needs of everyday language comprehension.
There will be several teachers with different approaches to teaching, in charge of different aspects of studying the language.
You can also use the afternoons for one-to-one classes with teachers if you want to solve a grammatical problem, or do your homework.
Certificate
After you pass the test at the end of the school, you will receive a certificate confirming that you speak B/C/S at a specific level.
FREE TIME
After classes, you can spend time at our premises, use the library, surf the internet, or spend your time in the city.
Baščarsijske noći and the Sarajevo Film Festival, festivals which offer cultural events every night, are held at the same time as our school, and you can find the program and information on other
events online at:

Evening workshops
We organize evening workshops on the following topics: sevdah at the House of Sevdah, traditional cuisine, folklore, tradition of BiH (a visit to Svrzo's house and the tradition of drinking coffee/kahva/kava/kafa), BiH cinema, modern BiH literature, a short course in Cyrillic script, and we also organize workshops adjusted to the wishes of the students. Make sure you specify in your application what you would like to do at the workshops.
Trip
We use the weekend to visit some of our towns filled with monuments and cultural heritage. Last year we went to Mostar. This year we could visit Travnik, Jajce, Banja Luka or the monasteries in Fojnica and Kraljeva Sutjeska. We are going to discuss the cultural riches but also the differences of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
