BCS Summer School in Sarajevo

Fourth Summer School of the B/C/S language in Sarajevo

23 July – 3 August, 2012

The Association Linguists is organising the fourth edition of the Summer School of the Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language this year.

The school lasts for two weeks, and consists of 40 classes of grammar and conversation. Additional activities include cooking and folklore workshops, translation classes, as well as a visit to a museum and a regional film screening. This year, instead of paying a visit to Mostar, we will travel to Travnik and Jajce, as a part of a one-day field trip.

Students will be divided into small groups according to their proficiency levels, and several teachers will work with them on different aspects of language acquisition.

Application process has already started, the price being 250 euro if you apply before 1 June. If you apply later, the price is 300 euro. We offer a discount for those who do not want to attend the additional activities.

Studying is not boring after all: "Facilitated learning" project completed

The „Facilitated learning“ project was completed by a show held on Saturday, 11th June at the Home for children without parental care Bjelave. Some of the acts of this one-hour-long show were: a scientific experiment, „Who wants to be an A student“ quiz show, and acts in Bosnian, English and German. Thus children had the opportunity to show what they had learnt with their teachers in the past several months. After the show, we continued socialising and enjoying a barbecue in the yard of the Home with our guest from the Dutch Embassy and all the friends of the project.

We would like to use this opportunity and thank all our teachers who worked on preparing the show. Merhunisa Raonić, the BCS teacher who prepared her students for two acts and worked with the host of the show. Special praise goes to Lamija Begagić, another BCS teacher, who prepared a quiz show with the youngest ones. Andrea Gotovac prepared an experiment in Science with two students; 'If the shape of an object changes, does the mass remain the same?'. Kristina Ćendić's student prepared a poem in English. We also need to mention Asja Hasančević; her students read the Red Riding Hood in German.

In the furnished classroom of the Home we could see different posters from Science, Maths and English, which the children used to study through play. There were models of chemical elements displayed on a cabinet, which were made by the children with the help of their teacher Mirela Šenderović. The idea of furnishing and equipping a classroom was so that the children would have a place to study, do their homework or surf the Internet.

Let's not forget the Maths teachers Belma Bosović and Azer Aljović; the English teacher Danka Dražić; primary school teachers Alma Nedić and Selma Paravlić who also worked tirelessly with the children on different school subjects, making posters, creating acknowledgements and invitation cards. We also won't forget Dina Abazović who has been working with these children for five years, teaching them English and Bosnian.

We are glad to have been able to give the young teachers a chance to start gathering work experience and make it more interesting for children to study. The success of the project is mirrored in better grades in school, children's greater interest in certain subjects, but also in the myriad of questions we had whether we were continuing the project next year as well.

Studying is not boring after all!
